Diet & Exercise Role in Cancer Survivorship

Clinical guidance on nutrition and physical activity continues to evolve alongside growing evidence of their role in cancer survivorship and prevention. Sonia Amin Thomas, PharmD, BCOP, AFMCP (PCOM School of Pharmacy–Georgia and NGOC at Wellstar Health System), will examine current guideline recommendations, evidence-based dietary patterns and physical activity interventions for cancer survivors.

Using a patient case, the session will explore how these recommendations can be individualized and incorporated into practice, including the distinct contributions of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and the multidisciplinary care team.

This activity offers 1.0 continuing education credit hour for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Pharmacist Objectives:

  • Review updates for evidence from guidelines (ACLM, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®), ASCO/SIO, etc) for evidence based dietary patterns and physical activity recommendations for cancer survivorship/prevention​
  • Distinguish the impact of nutrition and physical activity interventions on cancer survivors ​
  • Apply individualized patient-centered recommendations for nutrition and physical activity given a patient case-based scenario​
  • Discuss how to integrate the role of a multidisciplinary into current practice recommendations for nutrition and physical activity for cancer survivors.

Pharmacy Technician Objectives:

  • Review updates from clinical guidelines on nutrition and physical activity in cancer survivorship and prevention, including evidence-based dietary patterns as well as physical activity recommendations.​
  • Distinguish the impact of nutrition and physical activity interventions on cancer survivors ​
  • List individualized patient-centered recommendations for nutrition and physical activity given a patient case-based scenario​
  • Discuss how to integrate the role of a multidisciplinary team in current practice for cancer survivors ​
