Learn From Successful Medically-Integrated Practices
Our member practices have the opportunity to learn from other practices that are already successfully dispensing. Through NCODA, dispensing practices can come together to develop standards and best practices for delivering oral and IV pharmaceuticals to oncology patients.
Oncology physicians lead the medical management of cancer care, guiding patients through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship with clinical expertise and compassion. In a medically integrated practice, they work closely with pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other specialists to develop and oversee individualized treatment plans. Their role extends beyond prescribing therapy—they ensure that care is aligned, coordinated, and responsive to each patient’s unique needs. By embracing a team-based, patient-centered approach, oncology physicians help drive improved outcomes and a more seamless, supportive treatment experience.
Oncology pharmacists are highly trained medication experts who play a critical role in the safe and effective delivery of cancer treatments. Within a medically integrated oncology practice, they are embedded in the care team, collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, and other providers to ensure that each patient’s therapy is optimized, personalized, and well-coordinated. They manage complex medication regimens, monitor for potential interactions and side effects, and provide essential education to patients and caregivers. Their direct involvement in the clinical setting enhances medication access, improves adherence, and supports better treatment outcomes.
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)—including nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs)—are integral to the delivery of comprehensive oncology care. In a medically integrated practice, APPs assess, diagnose, and manage treatment plans in close collaboration with physicians and the broader care team. They provide direct patient care, monitor treatment response, manage side effects, and offer critical education and support to patients and families. Their clinical expertise and accessibility enhance the patient experience and help ensure seamless, high-quality care across all aspects of the cancer journey.
Nurses are vital to promoting the importance of the medically-integrated team and advocating for the improvement of managing patients receiving oral and IV oncolytics. In a medically integrated oncology practice, they serve as vital connectors between patients and the multidisciplinary care team. From administering treatments and managing symptoms to offering education and emotional support, oncology nurses play a central role in delivering coordinated, patient-centered care. Their close collaboration with pharmacists, physicians, and other team members ensures that patients receive timely, safe, and effective therapy in a supportive and understanding environment.
Pharmacy technicians are key members of the medically integrated oncology care team, supporting the safe, accurate, and efficient delivery of oral and infused cancer therapies. Working closely with pharmacists, they assist with medication preparation, inventory management, prior authorizations, and patient communication. In a medically integrated pharmacy, technicians play a hands-on role in ensuring patients have timely access to their medications, while also helping to maintain seamless coordination across the care team. Their attention to detail and commitment to patient care contribute directly to improved outcomes and a more supportive treatment experience.
By empowering oncology pharmacy technicians through free continuing education and oncolytics resources, we can create better continuity of care for patients being treated with oral oncolytics.
NCODA’s Professional Student Organization empowers the future generation of oncology pharmacy professionals. We support students through education, mentorship, meeting scholarships, professional development and post-graduate training.
Practice administrators play a crucial role in the overall success and efficiency of an oncology care team. They are responsible for managing the daily operations of the practice—overseeing staff, coordinating patient services, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and optimizing financial performance. In a medically integrated oncology setting, administrators are essential in aligning clinical and pharmacy services, streamlining workflows, and supporting a patient-centered approach to care. Their leadership ensures that the entire team can focus on delivering high-quality, coordinated care that improves patient outcomes.

Q: Tell us about your practice.
A: The American Oncology Network (AON) has 200+ providers located throughout 21 states and approximately 73 employees. Most of the employees work remotely but we do have pharmacists and technicians on site at our medication dispensing loaction in Fort Myers, FL. As the medically integrated specialty pharmacy for the AON oncology clinics, we provide invaluable services to assist patients in getting on and staying on specialty oncology therapies, including benefit investigations, prior authorizations, financial assistance, education, counseling and adherence.
Q: Why is your practice involved with NCODA?
A: We joined to network and learn from other oncology professionals. Our team have created some wonderful collaborative friendships. We are thankful that every day our team strives to accomplish more and do what is best for our patients and caregivers.
Q: How is your practice involved with NCODA?
A: We are proud to have one of our team members involved as an OPTA leader and now also an NCODA Regional Leader. Many team members of AON Pharmacy are actively involved in OPTA and NCODA as well including attending and presenting education seminars.
Q: Could you speak on the value of a particular NCODA resource?
A: AON Pharmacy nurses and pharmacists utilize Oral Chemotherapy Education (OCE) sheets for patient and caregiver education. Our management also utilizes the Cost Avoidance Waste Tracker (CAWT) to capture data to demonstrate how our reassessments help to reduce waste across the health care system, and NCODA Treatment Support Kits (TSK) where applicable.
Q: What challenges does your practice face in oncology?
A: We anticipate that the financial toxicity of these expensive medications unfortunately will continue to be a challenge for our patients. We see that the prior authorization and patient assistance requirements have become more challenging to navigate.
Q: How can industry partners support Medically Integrated Pharmacies?
A: Industry partners can better support the medically integrated team/pharmacy by listening to our feedback about barriers to patient care. They can support us by assisting with making changes that benefit the patients and provide prompt access to life-saving medications.
