Creating a Collaborative Community Environment
NCODA is committed to creating a collaborative community environment, providing a platform for practice members to share everyday experiences and help one another succeed. Each month, our Practice in Focus participants have the opportunity to talk about their practice during the NCODA International Monthly Webinar. Practice in Focus is an ideal way to highlight the work being done within our members’ facilities while connecting cancer care specialists.

Q: Tell us about your practice.
A: The practice is UW Health Northern Illinois, and the cancer center is Carbone Cancer Center of Rockford. Located in Rockford, IL. UW Health Northern Illinois as a whole has 1,800 physicians and around 24,000 employees.
Q: Why is your practice involved with NCODA?
A: A supervisor recommended joining NCODA as a way to learn more about oral chemotherapy and to meet other people who worked in similar practices.
Q: How is your practice involved with NCODA?
A: We have team members involved in the Oncology Pharmacy Technician Association (OPTA), with some becoming certified oncology pharmacy technicians through NCODA. Our practice also includes a regional leader. Most of the specialty pharmacy team are members of NCODA. We have done a few PQI in Actions over the last several years. We try to have at least a few people participate in the Spring Forum and the Fall Summit.
Q: Could you speak on the value of a particular NCODA resource?
A: Probably the most valuable resource for our team has been the Oral Chemotherapy Education (OCE) Sheets. We use those for every single chemo teach that we do and then a copy of it gets sent to every patient as well.
Q: What challenges does your practice face in oncology?
A: A recent team poll identified several key challenges: insurance companies not keeping up with drug guidelines, mandated use of mail-order pharmacies despite providing better care in-house, high treatment costs and delays even with grants or manufacturer assistance, increasing provider burnout, and patient transportation struggles due to frequent appointments.
Q: How can industry partners support Medically Integrated Pharmacies?
A: Industry partners can better support the medically integrated team and pharmacy by hosting more in-services and similar opportunities to help us stay informed about the latest drug information and guidelines.
